Abstract
The liver is exposed to a number of stresses during a surgical procedure. The abnormality in liver function after operation or major trauma has become a consideration since WORLD WAR IL and there are several reports in the literature dealing with the postoperative liver dysfunction.
This is a study of 34 abdominal operations, which were selected from the patients who, were admitted and treated with surgical operations at the Dept. of General Surgery of Han II Hospital from Jan. 1974 to Aug. 1974.
The results are as follows; -
1. The rate of changes of the serum enzyme levels was much higher- after biliary tract surgery than that after any other abdominal operations.
2. In the cases of other abdominal operations, if they were at shock state before operations, -
the cases with metastasis cancer to the liver, and the cases of which operation procedure
involved the upper abdomen, the enzyme levels were changed after operations.
3. The rate of changes was higher in general anesthesia than that in spinal anesthesia. 4. But the anesthetic agents appeared to play no role in enzyme levels_ 5. Age and sex were not correlated with the results.
6. The maximum SGOT levels were obtained at one or two days after operations, usually. 7. But Ap levels usually appeared to decrease at the first postoperative day.
